In February 2015, we were surprised by the news that a major flood had struck Malawi. Together with the association Mlango e.V. and the Mulanje Mission Hospital, we entered into a dialogue to discuss the consequences of the flood. Quickly and without red tape, a toilet project was launched to prevent diseases and epidemics across Malawi. More than 5 months have now passed, and we can draw a first conclusion from the project. More than 3,000 toilets have been rebuilt in more than 70 villages. Various organizations collected donations in their home regions, among them Ansbach für Malawi. These donations were transferred to the Mulanje Mission Hospital, which purchased and distributed the basic materials for the toilet construction. The Malawian Ministry of Environment and Health built the toilets in the villages together with the villagers. Everyone involved worked on a volunteer basis, making their skills and tools available to the community. The residents were also able to contribute smaller building materials, so that the project, as an inclusive effort driven by the community itself, achieved great success.
