Malawi, a country that captivates with its natural beauty and cultural diversity, faces enormous educational challenges at the same time. In Malawi’s remote areas, it is not unusual for students to have to sit on the floor, which significantly impairs their motivation and effectiveness in learning. Girls in particular suffer when they have to leave school once their period begins. To meet these challenges, the MOYO association has taken on a new project, which was initiated in mid-2024 and has been ongoing since then.

Sustainable improvement of learning conditions
As part of this project, MOYO has started the production of school desks in local workshops – each unit has the desktop and bench fixed together in order to improve learning conditions in the schools in a sustainable way. The project began with the Mwangothaya Primary School in the Nkondezi region and will be extended to further schools if it proceeds successfully. The first prototypes were built by a carpenter and are now being produced for the school by carpenters in the remote villages.

Local value creation and economic strengthening
Producing the school desks locally not only improves learning conditions but also strengthens local economic cycles and creates jobs. Each desk is made by local craftspeople and costs 35 euros. Equipping one classroom requires 30 desks. Despite logistical challenges, the first prototypes were successfully delivered to the school and immediately put to enthusiastic use by the students.
